11/10/2022 0 Comments Is mirc no longer free![]() ![]() It's a very good IRC client, I find, but it does have a learning curve to it. One that may be worth checking out is irssi, which has a Windows port, but caveat emptor - it's a textmode-only client. There are some minor alternatives remaining a Google search should turn them up. Getting started with AndroIRC is fairly easy, and the quick start wizard makes things even simpler. #IS MIRC NO LONGER FREE FOR ANDROID#And while the source code for Windows X-Chat is still freely available (minus the code for the shareware activation, the major bone of contention) and you can compile it yourself, building from source in Windows is nowhere near as elegant as it is in a *nix environment - all the more so if you've never done it before. Probably one of the best IRC client apps for Android out there, AndroIRC includes a whole bunch of solid features that make it a must have app for those wanting to connect over IRC via Android devices. About two years ago its author decided to switch to a shareware model for distribution of the Windows executable (though all other ports remain open-sourced), setting off a firestorm of complaints about GPL violations and the like. The best free Windows alternative is Pidgin, which is also Open Source. ![]() Also, nowadays there are far better free webmail solutions out there, which basically makes our offering obsolete. #IS MIRC NO LONGER FREE SOFTWARE#Sadly, the days when mIRC had several decent challengers for the crown of "Best Windows IRC Client" are over the roadside is littered with the corpses of Visual IRC, PIRCh, XiRCON, and other worthy-but-failed competitors. It provides access to just about any channel you can imagine, and its free to try for 30 days, so you have plenty of time to test it out. The reason for this is that the software we used for this service has not been maintained by the supplier for a number of years, which means it can no longer be trusted to be safe. ![]()
